The truth is anyone can—with the right idea. At Radio St. Pete, we host and produce 75+ rotating podcasts, 9,700 interviews/series and 25+ local music shows, earning “Best Radio Station” in Creative Loafing’s 2025 Best of the Bay awards. Successful examples include Frugal Friends, Passion Struck with John R. Miles and Kerry Kriseman’s Making Memoir Magic.
Starting out can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. Many local studios and experienced creators are ready to help. DIY at home is another alternative.
Podcasting can fit almost any budget. A simple setup with a microphone and headphones can get you started for $60 to $100 while investing in an audio interface, software and higher-quality gear may bring the cost closer to $1,000. Platforms like RadioFM and Buzzsprout make hosting easy, Audacity provides straightforward editing and Canva can help you create logos and promotional art. You can also grow your audience with newsletters through Substack, LinkedIn, Mailchimp or Constant Contact. You should also make sure your episodes appear in directories like Apple Podcasts and on Spotify.
The key is planning and execution. Nail your concept, find your niche and define what makes your podcast unique. Map out about 10 potential episodes and create a wish list of guests you would like to feature. Let the topic guide your episode length and develop engaging openers and signoffs. Janet Keeler, for example, loves children’s books and focuses on introducing her audience to authors and various other guests regarding the importance of reading through her Storytime podcast.
Your audience and community are out there, so stop waiting and start creating!
