I remember when my kids were little and the holidays revolved around the excitement of what might be waiting under the tree—and a few extra days away from school. Now I get to watch my granddaughters, Arrow and Saylor, wake up early and turn the house into a sea of wrapping paper.
It is joyful, a little chaotic and a reminder of how our perspective changes. Over time, the holidays become less about what we receive and more about what we can give, share and pass along.
Here in St. Petersburg, generosity is woven into the community. We see it when neighbors support local nonprofits, volunteers offer their time and families help others through difficult seasons. Serving on local boards has shown me that meaningful giving is not always about writing the largest check. Time, experience, relationships and consistent involvement can be just as valuable.
The most thoughtful giving usually begins with a simple question: What matters most to me and my family? Perhaps it is helping children, protecting our waterways, supporting the arts, caring for animals, strengthening education or assisting others in crisis. Once the purpose is clear, charitable giving becomes more personal and intentional.
The holidays also offer a natural opportunity to include children and grandchildren in the conversation. Let them help choose a cause. Volunteer together, or decide as a family where a gift should go. Those experiences can create traditions that last far longer than a gift beneath the tree.
Wealth can provide comfort and opportunity, but it can also express gratitude. When giving reflects your values, it becomes part of the legacy your family lives, shares and carries forward today and across future generations.
