Count the Moments, Not the Years

Life has a way of moving forward whether we are ready or not. My sister passed away last year at age 48 after a long battle with cancer. A friend from high school, who was in incredible shape, died suddenly of a heart attack. I’ve seen clients develop health challenges that prevent them from enjoying activities they love.

Those experiences have changed the way I think about time. A successful entrepreneur once shared an idea that stuck with me: Instead of measuring life by years, measure it by moments.

My mother lives in Chicago and is in her late 70s. If I only see her once a year, I may have just 10 more visits with her if she lives into her late 80s.

In nearly 30 years as a financial advisor, clients have shared wisdom that extends far beyond finances:

Plan for experiences. Create memories with family and friends. The stories you make together often become your most valuable assets.

Plan for giving back. Whether through time, talent or resources, serving others leaves a lasting impact that reaches far beyond what we can see.

Plan for the unexpected. Life’s biggest changes rarely arrive on schedule. Building flexibility into your plans can help you navigate whatever comes next.

Plan for your later years. Think about where you want to live, how you want to spend your time and who you want beside you on the journey.

Most importantly, share your hopes, priorities and plans with the people who matter most. Because in the end, a meaningful life is measured not in years but by the impactful moments we create along the way.
