After testing the revamped seventh-generation Outback Wilderness, which now sports a midsize SUV/crossover appearance, it's clear the Outback is no longer a “lifted wagon.” It is taller and boxier with a higher ground clearance than before. Regardless of its appearance, it boasts a solid ride with quick acceleration and superb handling and steering. The standard all-wheel-drive system, along with dual X-Mode traction management, ensures exceptional balance in all driving conditions.

The 2.4-liter turbocharged horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine returns, producing 260 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 277 pound-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm. Power is routed through a continuously variable transmission with eight-speed manual-shift capability, delivering adequate performance. An independent MacPherson strut front suspension and double-wishbone rear suspension deliver a pleasantly agile ride. Steering response from the rack-and-pinion power-assisted system is sharp, precise and well weighted. Strong 12.4-inch ventilated front discs and 11.8-inch rear discs provide confident stopping power. Towing capacity is a respectable 3,500 pounds.

The updated front shows off Subaru in all caps flanked by stacked LEDs and anodized copper accents instead of the familiar hexagonal grille. Befitting its adventure-focused spirit, the exterior body features wilderness cladding. The steeply raked back window flows into a new light bar extending across the width of the liftgate. The twin-cockpit design, highlighted by electroluminescent gauge displays for the speedometer, tachometer, fuel level and coolant temperature, enhances the cabin's upscale ambiance.

Safety remains a Subaru strong suit. The latest EyeSight suite includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane-departure warning and lane-centering assistance, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert provide additional peace of mind. This redesigned and easy-on-the-pocket Subaru is a tempting midsize SUV that has sold more than 3 million units since its U.S. debut over three decades ago.

Thanks to a functional interior, subtle styling and, best of all, standard all-wheel drive, which showcases its on-road ride/handling and off-road talent, the Outback is a terrific performer.
